In nominal compounding in Tokyo Japanese (N1+N2→〉N₁N₂), as is well known, the sec­ond element (N₂) determines the accent pattern of the entire word (N₁N₂). In prefixation, on the other hand, this rule does not always apply. Some [prefix + noun] structures involving kyuu- or some other prefixes do not follow the rule, showing exceptional accent patterns. Analyzing 203 examples, we dem­onstrate that the exceptional accent patterns pertaining to those prefixed nouns are motivated by the se­mantic properties of the prefixes and the base nouns.
